Making

Western Washington produces fine wines from locally grown varieties of grapes. In a climate similar to the classic French and German wine growing provinces, grapes grown in this area mature with a complex, fruity flavor that is captured in quality wines. The Puget Sound Wine Growers have been designated with a regional appellation for the Puget Sound area, and their wineries feature wines from locally grown grapes as well as fruit and berry wines.

Hard (fermented) cider was once a staple of the American farm. Long known in England and France, hard cider is once more gaining an appreciation here. The special types of apples used in hard cider making are particularly well adapted to conditions in the Puget Sound area, and cider makers are taking advantage of this to produce lively, refreshing ciders.

Cideries & Cider Makers

The Northwest Cider Society (E-mail Ron Irvine, president) has been organized to promote the making of hard (fermented) cider, its appreciation and marketing to the public. The Society is a contact for home cider makers, and organizes group tastings, membership meetings, and harvest cooperatives for cider production.
